Why always a puppy ???
Families with children are always looking for puppies. Why?
They are looking for an unspoiled and sociable dog with a firm character that they can teach and form. That’s exactly the case with the southern stray dogs, no matter how old they are. They usually have not lived in a home and because of living in a pack, they are very sociable. Because they are not easily irritated by children, their relationship is good. They are quickly housetrained, don’t chew the furnishings, don’t have to go out every two hours, after being accustomed they stay alone at home and are much more concentrated during their training.
Because the nature of an adult dog hardly changes, you can size up the dogs character much better. That enables you to choose your dog by its character and properties and not by its looks.
You should always bear in mind that these great dogs always need time to get accustomed and everyone has to arrange themselves with the new member of the family. Every animal is an individual. One needs more time, the other needs less time to get used to its new life. Therefore, let your new member of the family enough time to get used to you and – if necessary – use the competent advice of a good dog-school. There, where you can get in touch with other keepers. To promote your dogs good social properties, you should make sure that your dog has got enough playmates that he can meet.
You should consider following points before you take over a dog from abroad:
- Most of the animals haven’t had a home, they have either lived on the road or in an animal shelter. They have never seen a house from the inside, so they know nothing about cleanliness. Nevertheless, we have made the experience that the elder dogs ( not puppies ) are clean by intuition or after a short period of time.
- The dogs have to learn to walk on the leash. Some dogs regard the leash as a threat. One needs a lot of patience to get them accustomed!
- In the beginning some dogs can’t do their “ business “ on the leash. They just don’t know it. They have to learn that as well.
- The dogs have to learn how to go up and down stairs. Most of them are afraid of that.
- Because of bad experiences made by the dogs, its possible that they are afraid of people. That nearly always disappears when they notice how well off they are. Some dogs are especially afraid of men.
- The dogs have to learn everything new, e. g. vacuum cleaners, traffic noise, lifts, etc.
- Although the dogs have a medical check up by a vet and are vaccinated before take off, they may still get ill due to stress. Even distemper and parvovirose can’t be excluded, especially amongst puppies. We advise you to have your dog treated for worms. Puppies, younger than 4 months are mediated from our temporary homes. If you can offer a temporary home for a puppy notify us. More information here…..
- It’s not possible to have the dogs washed in Greece before take off. Leave the dogs a few days to get used to their new surroundings before you bath them. Use a special shampoo for vermin.
- The dogs can only be handed over with a protective contract and for a protective fee of 150 Euro ( castrated males: 200 Euro, castrated females: 220 Euro ). A check in form of a talk at your home will be carried out before and/ or after you receive the dog. The fee is used to cover the cost of vaccinations and the transport of the dogs and secures the cost for food and medical treatment for the dogs in Greece.
